Welcome to the world of active, adorable preschoolers. They are developmentally in the fast lane having just accomplished a world record in growth during their first two years of life. As they round the bend at age two they delight us when they run and jump; amaze us with their expert use of the senses – God’s build in teachers; and challenge us with their strong wills.
In their emerging autonomy, we want two year olds to have a good balance of freedom within boundaries. Amid the displays of independence and emotion we notice our little ones beginning to imitate expressions of faith such as prayer and singing. Together, we read Bible stories on their level. They learn of a loving, caring God who created everything and who provides for us.
By three they are spinning, balancing on one foot, eating with a spoon and fork, pouring water and unbuttoning. They believe what adults say but are not keen on full time cooperation.
They discover that others have their own needs and rights. With loving firmness we teach and remind them to observe guidelines and limits. “Will I assert or yield my will” – they learn to decide for themselves. The adults in their lives are learning patience with a whole new meaning.
But there, in the midst of daily changes, we realize our little three's are beginning to see God in human terms as they develop a mental image of Him. They learn that Bible characters chose to do right, to help and to obey. They begin to relate Bible stories and themes to their daily life experiences.
By age four they are feeling more like “big kids” and loving it. They walk forward and backward and have better balance. They cut with scissors, comb their hair, wash their hands and write a few letters of the alphabet.
They pretend, ask hundreds of questions, and think literally and not abstractly. They realize they are growing, begin a sense of initiative, explore, examine and are impulsive. They are developing a conscience; they want to help; they are more fearful and they are learning to cooperate.
They are interested in God’s greatness, power and supernatural abilities. The adults in a four year-old’s life are encouraged as we see these little ones mimic expressions of faith modeled before them. We’re exhausted but blessed – they’re getting it!!
Age five! Kindergarten! They draw simple shapes, button, zip, lace and sometimes tie. They are still trying to coordinate small muscles in their daily activities.
They love to help – especially parents and teachers. There are starting to be differences between fantasy and reality. Their vocabulary has grown considerably and they express themselves using more complex sentences. They are learning to read and write!
They see and are learning to accept differences in people. They still need guidelines and can now help make them. They are learning to control the expressions of their feelings and they enjoy being a part of real life.
They are beginning to be influenced greatly by stories of faith both in Biblical accounts, people around them and their own faith stories. We are thrilled to see and hear them pause to connect Truth and faith with their experiences.
Preschoolers are busy learning and experiencing. Now is the time to give them hands on opportunities to help grasp glimpses of God at work during their “teachable moments”. Enjoy every minute, Mom and Dad. It goes by so very fast.
