Brain Development & Faith Formation in the Nursery
Baby and their Brain Cells
The most amazing aspect of prebirth development is the development of
the brain. Did you know that by the time your baby is 3 months old in the
womb, the brain is functioning quite well. That is six months before your
baby is born there are lots of activity going on inside their brain!
The brain cells are migrating to the location they will have for a lifetime.
The brain has begun to develop synapses, or connections, between the brain
cells. As the cells arrive at their destination, they take on the function
of that particular place. Some become sight cells, some become memory cells,
and some become hearing cells. Others become language and logic cells.
God made each set of cells to know exactly what they are to do.
Brain Power and Faith
It is vital to think about what babies can learn! Putting
this information together with what we know about a baby’s brain and how a child’s
faith is formed is vital. The goal of teaching in the nursery is to help
each baby (individually one-on-one) learn experientially about God’s
love. A child needs to feel safe and secure in order to form relationships
to participate in activities that will build trust and enhance brain development.
At birth, the brain is a jumble of billions of nerve cells waiting to form
connections. Every time a child learns something, a new connection is being
formed, such as hearing about God and his love in the nursery.
Loving and caring experiences in the nursery provide the organizing framework
for a child’s brain. Using activities such as touching, talking,
singing, cuddling, comforting and reading to the baby in our nursery can
produce dramatic increases in the development of a baby’s brain.
As you hold a baby in your arms and they feel loved and secure, they form
a trust in you and as they hear their name associated with God (Susie,
God loves you very much) they begin to connect themselves with a sense
of God and His love. This is an important beginning of a child’s “Faith
Formation”.
Curriculum in the Nursery
Do babies and toddlers simply need to be fed, changed and rocked? What can they possibly learn about God? Why do we have curriculum for them in our nursery at Grace Community Church? So we can plant the seeds of God’s love, as they are being held and nurtured, which will affect his or her whole life! We use Gospel Lights- Little Blessings curriculum which provides colorful wall charts and flash cards with simple stories, bible verses and songs. This curriculum is designed to build a spiritual foundation for faith in the little ones.
